"A good man will take care of his horses and dogs not only while they are young
but also when they are old and past service." – Plutarch, 100 A.D.
Founded in 2012, This Old Horse is a private, volunteer-based 501(c)3 nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide sanctuary to retired, rescued, and recovering horses while they continue to serve as ambassadors to the positive effect of "horse power" in the lives of people.
Our mission is to create a sanctuary for aged or unwanted horses who have served us well. We are a retirement refuge for horses who, alongside their human professionals, have worked hard for a living. As these horses age, time and effort take their toll, and they are no longer capable of full-time work. Often their owners or handlers must move them out to make room for more able-bodied replacements.
We give these veterans a safe harbor for life where they may age in place, loved, honored and respected to the end.
We are a Certified Rescue and help abused, neglected and abandoned horses recover. We also support horses whose owners have experienced hardship and are unable to care for them as well as horses who need rehabilitation services to recover from injury.
In 2016, we were honored to be one of only about
30 equine sanctuaries in the United States to be accredited by the Global Federation
of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS).
